Union News or Nick's Utterings

Nick Richards, Federal C.O.

Two more battles on the Road to Malvern Hill, with the engagement at Golders Farm on the Sunday and the Battle of Savage Station on the Monday, having the Homesteaders on the battlefield gave it the correct theme and setting for the weekend. Both battles went according to plan, i.e. see Battles and leaders volume two on the seven days, although of course we did it on a much smaller scale.

I thought that once again the Federal Battalion performed really well with all arms working really well together and the legs didn't do to badly either (JOKE).

I still get people asking me "can I have wall tent". The only people who have wall tents are the company C.O's and the Artillery. Each company has one C.O. Tent and one mess tent, that includes the Drum Major, who I would like to say did a grand job with drum corps. Over the weekend, any other tents ordinance etc. Go into the administration street at the side of the camp with West point Sutlers and sometimes Civilian tents. Anyone wanting a "Storage Tent" or larger tent can have one if they choose, a nine foot A frame which can go into company streets, some companies already use the larger A frame as "Storage Tents". If we let all and sundry for various reasons have wall tents the Officers row would be a mile long and would cause logistical nightmares when putting up the Federal camp. I hope this clears up the question of tentage on the Federal camp. If in doubt come and see me.

Anyway keep up the good work improving our camp impressions etc.

Yours in the cause,

Major Nick Richards, C.i.C., Federal Battalion, ACWS
