CODE OF CONDUCT FOR SUTLERS

Attending Events of
The American Civil War Society

Adopted at ACWS Board Meeting 3rd April 2002
Amended at ACWS Board Meetings 21st May 2005,
16th June 2007 & 8th May 2010

  1. All Sutlers (traders) attending American Civil War Society (ACWS) events are permitted to sell only merchandise and goods relevant to the subject of the American Civil War. Unsuitable merchandise will be required to be withdrawn. Sutlers are responsible for the security of their stock and property and are to bear their own risks.

  2. For stallholders on the Authentic Camps their sales staff should be suitably attired in period costume and their stall be of American Civil War style, type or appearance. Plastic gazebo-type stalls are strongly discouraged and may only be set up on areas away from the authentic camps, as directed by the ACWS Sutlers Co-ordinator.

  3. The selling of counterfeit (pirate) CDs, cassettes or videos is unlawful and will not be tolerated by ACWS. If any trader is found selling counterfeit merchandise of this nature legal action may be taken. Likewise the unlicensed/unauthorised selling of tobacco products and alcohol is unlawful and similarly prohibited.

  4. Due to health and hygiene regulations ,food products are not permitted to be sold where such products are made or cooked on site or at home (unless the vendor has the appropriate licences and permissions to so trade and does so in an authorised manner). Pre-packaged manufacturer-supplied items not contravening the regulations are acceptable. Food products must be in their original packaging when sold.

  5. The trading of guns, ammunitions, other weapons (including blades) and firearms is unlawful (unless via a Registered Firearms Dealer for guns and ammunition and by a proper person for any other items with all proper procedures) and is prohibited. Any such actions will result in the trader being required to leave forthwith and may result in a report to the police.

  6. ACWS wishes to promote fair trade for the benefit of its members and those attending its events. It will not condone, allow, or suffer the display of any counterfeit, poor quality, unsafe, or unlawful products or items, particularly unlawful mood altering substances.

  7. All dogs should be kept under control at all times (unless prohibited at that event).

  8. All stallholders are required to report to the appointed ACWS Sutlers Co-ordinator on arrival at events for directions on where, how and when to set up and other trading arrangements including trading fee payments.

  9. Public Liability Insurances. Commercial traders (i.e. professionals or those who trade elsewhere) are not covered by ACWS Public Liability Insurances and have to produce either annually or at the start of the event if a new trader, a copy of their own policy to the Sutlers Co-ordinator for at least £5M such cover. Hobby traders (members of ACWS who only trade in a small way and only at ACWS events) are covered by ACWS PL Insurances. Any other Insurances are the Sutler’s responsibility.

  10. Sensible opening times should be adhered to; generally between 9.00 am – 6.00 pm are acceptable trading times. Arrival and break-down of stalls outside normal event times is by prior arrangement with the Sutlers Co-ordinator only.

  11. All other rules and regulations of ACWS are appropriate to Sutlers.
