  • The ordinance of secession is adopted at Tallahassee, FL, by Florida, by the convincing vote of 62-7, becoming the 3rd state to secede from the Union.
  • The US troops are transferred from Barrancas Barracks to Fort Pickens, Santa Rosa Island, Pensacola Harbor, FL, by the order of Lieut. Adam Jacoby Slemmer, US 1st Artillery.
  • The US Arsenal/Barracks at Baton Rouge, LA, is seized by the Louisiana state troops led by Braxton Bragg, by order of Louisiana Governor Thomas 0. Moore.
  • Fort Caswell is seized by the citizens of Smithville and Wilmington, North Carolina. (2nd seizure Apr 16)
Friday January 10 1862
  • Federal expedition into Kentucky from Cairo, IL, led by Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, USA, and Brig. Gen. John McClernand, USA. (Jan 10-21)
  • Engagement at Middle Creek, near Prestonburg, KY, with Col. James Abram Garfield, USA, receiving the promotion to Brig. Gen. the following day due to his perceived victory over Brig. Gen. Humphrey Marshall, CSA.
  • The Confederate Trans-Mississippi District of Dept. No. 2, is organized, under the command of Maj. Gen. Earl Van Dorn, CSA.
  • Romney, WV, is evacuated by the Union force, and subsequently occupied by Maj. Gen. Stonewall Jackson, CSA.
Saturday January 10 1863
  • Camille Armand Jules Marie Prince de Polignac, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
  • The Engagement at Arkansas Post, or Fort Hindman, on the Arkansas River, AR, with the Confederate shore batteries and the Union gunboats, the USS Baron de Kalb, Black Hawk, Cincinnati, Lexington, Louisville, and the Rattler. (Jan 10-11)
  • Federal reconnaissance near Arkansas Post, or Fort Hindman, AR, where Maj. Gen. John McClernand. USA, surrounds Brig. Gen. Thomas James Churchill, CSA.
  • Skirmish at Carrollton, AR.
  • Brig. Gen. Thomas West Sherman, USA, assumes the command of the Defenses of New Orleans, LA.
  • Skirmish at Clifton, TN.
  • Maj. Gen. Franz Sigel, USA, assumes the command of the Reserve Grand Division, the Army of the Potomac, VA.
  • Maj. Gen. Fitz John Porter, USA, is court marshalled and cashiered out of the Union army following the Military Court's decision he failed to follow orders at the Battle of 2nd Manassas, or Bull Run, VA, on Aug 29,1863. Porter's guilt is questionable.
Sunday January 10 1864
  • Skirmish at King's River, AR.
  • Federal expedition from Vicksburg, MS, aboard the steamers, Era, Madison and Northerner, up the Mississippi River, to Sunnyside Landing, AR, 200 miles, to disperse the Confederates that were obstructing navigation and reported to be attempting to move arms and ammunition from the east side to the west side of the Mississippi. Finding no Confederates, the Federals retire. (Jan 10-16)
  • Federal scout from near Dandridge to Clark's Ferry, TN, and encounter with Col. George D. Dibrell's, CSA, Confederates, with casualties on both sides. (Jan 10-11)
  • Skirmish about 6 miles from Mossy Creek, TN, where a Union scouting party surprise attack the Confederates, inflicting casualties.
  • Skirmish at Loudoun Heights, VA, where Maj. John S. Mosby, CSA, slips into the Federal camp and surprises a superior force of Federals at 4:30 a.m.; however, the Union rally, and some of Mosby's men end up giving the ultimate in sacrifice for their cause.
  • Federal scout to Sperryville, VA, by Brig. Gen. Wesley Merritt, USA, with Confederate prisoners.
  • Skirmish at Petersburg, WV.
Tuesday January 10 1865
  • Skirmish with guerrillas near Glasgow, MO, as the Yankees divy up the spoils from one dead guerrilla which included a belt and 6 revolvers, 4 purses containing $ 72.25, pocketknives, 1 pocket compass, 1 gold pen and silver holder, and the likenesses of 2 young ladies, in addition to his hat and boots.
